FINAL CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ISVD 2007

The International Symposium on Voronoi Diagrams in Science and Engineering holds its fourth conference in Wales, UK, illustrating the continuing interest in Voronoi and Delaunay methods, and the expanding list of application areas.

The Symposium was started because of the pressing demand for an international forum devoted exclusively to one of the most versatile and fascinating data structures in Computational Geometry - the Voronoi diagram, and due to the renewed interest in this area from many applied as well as fundamental sciences. It was intended and it has become an interdisciplinary forum for leading researchers to present the latest developments and applications of Voronoi diagrams, to discuss cutting-edge techniques, to exchange research ideas and to promote international collaboration in this field. Key topics for the Symposium are:

1.Theoretical aspects of Voronoi diagrams
2.Computational and implementation aspects of Voronoi diagrams
3.Generalization of Voronoi diagrams
4.Voronoi Art
5.Applications of the Voronoi/Delaunay methodology to other areas

The papers in this Symposium cover a whole range of interests ¡V theoretical mathematical treatments, implementation concerns in Computational Geometry, and applications at all scales, from molecular modelling to geographic information systems, to cosmology, to art. We think this shows the generality of a spatial model whose time has come. The Symposium is sponsored by the University of Glamorgan, UK, the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) and the EU Marie-Curie Chair in GIS, University of Glamorgan

ISVD 2007 Venue The University of Glamorgan is situated in the Welsh Valleys, the historic centre of much of the Industrial Revolution - the first commercial steam train started just a few miles away. It is well known for its rugby players and Welsh male-voice choirs. A variety of mediaeval castles, built by the English to suppress the Welsh in the 12th century, are within a short distance of the Conference Centre. Walking, or even hawking, is available in the Brecon Beacons just to the north. The Conference Banquet will take place in Caerphilly Castle, the second largest castle in the UK, complete with mediaeval entertainment. Please see the photos on the web site to get a flavour of the last banquet we organized there. http://www.comp.glam.ac.uk/GIS/ISVD07/default.html

Following tradition, there is a Voronoi Art Show in conjunction with the Symposium. This year's theme is "Voronoi in Nature". All interested parties, whether attending or not, are encouraged to submit their photos. Prizes will be given!

STUDENTS: Sponsorship of the "Voronoi Methods in GIS" workshop on 12 July by the EU Marie Curie Chair in GIS means that your travel can be subsidised! Funding will be distributed as far as possible. Women are especially invited to attend.

The ISVD07 symposium is on schedule, and looking good!

The submitted papers have been reviewed, and the successful papers have been revised and submitted for printing in the Proceedings. There will be 38 speakers from most parts of the world. Three invited lectures are given by Professors Karoly Bezdek, Michel Deza and Adreas Fabri.

The symposium will take place on the Monday to Thursday, 9-12 July. On Thursday there will be a full day Tutorial, included in the registration fees.

You will also find the Workshop Banquet, on Wednesday evening, to be very special. We have rented Caerphilly Castle, the second largest castle in the UK, and the Mediaeval Banquet, with whole roast lamb and pig, will be excellent. In addition, we have engaged a troupe of actors to give us a feel for life in the Middle Ages. They usually work at one of the Welsh Heritage sites, and are well renowned locally.

We hope that you will decide to come along for all these possible reasons: the calibre of the papers, from all over the world, on this cutting-edge topic; to discuss international collaboration opportunities; and the mediaeval banquet that will give you a real taste for the history of Wales, and an experience you will not forget!

Sincerely,

Chris Gold For the Local Organizing Committee
