Question: Name some factors that may encourage people to support a project:

Financial appraisal

Appears to be becoming increasingly unpopular

Three techniques (students at Glamorgan have a guide to financial appraisal that they should refer to now)

• to decide whether to proceed
• to decide which option is best

Identifying costs and benefits

• Costs: easily overlooked, easy to quantify
• Benefits: optimism often not warranted, can be difficult to quantify in monetary terms

Question: After 12 months and £1m, revised spending projections indicate benefits will be worth only £500k, and there is still £100k work yet to be done. Abandon project?
