The Centre carries out research in several areas of GIS with an emphasis upon the computing foundations of the subject. We are one of the largest GIS research groups in the UK and strengths of individual members of the group range across of a spectrum of subjects from spatial databases, applications in health, deep integration of GPS and GIS at the data level, map generalisation, automated cartography and remote sensing to terrain modelling, and 3D visualisation.

Current research projects address problems of multi-scale data access and map generalisation, the augmentation of GPS raw data using digital mapping for applications in navigation and position reliability, interoperability issues in farming decision support systems, spatio-temporal data modelling, spatial data compression, intervisibility analysis, hydrological modelling, environmental change detection, Web GIS and associated internet issues of spatial information retrieval and graphical user interfaces.

Applicability is an important aspect of our research and this is reflected in productive research collaborations with organisations such as ESRI, National Wind Power, Ordnance Survey, BT, Macaulay Land Use Research Institute, the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology, The National Museum of Wales, local SMEs and European academic and industrial partners. Research grant funding has been received from EPSRC, ESRC, NERC, The European Commission and The Nuffield Foundation.
