Conference Announcement

Following the success of earlier conferences in the GISRUK series, the Steering and Local Organising Committees have pleasure in announcing the ninth annual GIS Research Conference. The Conference has a number of aims:

The GISRUK series builds on an interdisciplinary foundation, and regularly draws participants from most of the disciplines which make up the field of GIS, including Archaeology, Computer Science, Geography, Surveying, Environmental Science, Engineering and Geomatics. The conference programme will reflect this diversity.

Venue

GISRUK 2001 will be held on the Main Campus of the University of Glamorgan in Treforest, situated just south of Pontypridd, and 10 miles north of Cardiff.

The Conference is organised by the GIS Research Centre in the School of Computing and hosted by the Glamorgan Business Centre. Accommodation will be in Glamorgan Court, only two minutes' walk from the conference venue.

Conference Format

The conference will include invited plenary sessions involving international speakers, including Nick Chrisman (AGI Keynote, University of Washington), Martien Molenaar (Taylor & Francis Keynote, ITC, Netherlands), David Maguire (ESRI) and Vanessa Lawrence (O.S.); parallel sessions of research papers, panel discussions, poster papers and a publishers' exhibition. Even though GISRUK started life as focus for UK GIS research, it has evolved into a truly intenational conference. This year, the conference programme is made up of contributions from 34 countries.

The scheduled sessions include GIS in Planning; Socio-Economic Applications; Transport & GPS; Health; Crime; Hydrology; Digital Terrain Modelling & Geomorphology; Coastal Zone; Environment; Remote Sensing; Cartographic Generalisation; Visualisation; Spatial Modelling & Interpolation; Database Design; and GeoComputation. The full programme of papers and speakers will be available shortly.

The evening sessions (wine receptions, panel discussion and entertainment) are to be held in Cardiff, with Wednesday's hot buffet dinner in the Glamorgan building of Cardiff University and Thursday's Conference Dinner hosted at City Hall.

Paper/Poster Submission Details

The deadline for abstract submission (8th January 2001) has now passed. Many thanks to those who have submitted abstracts. Abstracts have been reviewed by a Programme Committee selected from the Steering and the Local Organising Committees. Authors of submitted abstracts have been notified of their acceptance as papers or poster presentations. A book of these extended abstracts will be provided to all conference delegates. Authors are requested to confirm their intention to attend and present their papers immediately on acceptance. For further guidance, authors are advised to refer to the Illustrative Layout

Note that the principal means of communication used by the conference organisers will be email. Revised abstracts should be sent as email attachments, quoting the assigned abstract reference number.

Enquiries concerning abstracts should be addressed to the chair of the local organizing committee:
