Creating a simple Presentation
 | For the first stage of this exercise you will need to know how to:
 | Create a Presentation |
 | Add titles and text to a slide |
 | Add a slide |
 | Promoting and Demoting paragraphs |
 | Saving a Presentation to disk |
|
Stage 1
Start Microsoft PowerPoint, this is done by clicking on the Start button (in
bottom left of the screen), and choosing Programs. Depending on how the PC has been
set up you will see Microsoft Excel either on the Programs menu or on the
"Office" menu. Word, Excel and PowerPoint are all part of Microsoft's
Office Package. Once you have found Microsoft PowerPoint on the Start menus click on
its name to start it running.
 | In opening dialogue window, tell PowerPoint to create a "Blank
presentation". |
 | Choose"Bulleted List" for the slide layout and click OK. |
 | Enter the following text. |
What is Meningitis
 | Means inflammation of the meninges, the brain lining |
 | Caused be several different bacteria and viruses |
 | Bacterial meningitis is quite rare - very serious and needs urgent treatment with
antibiotics |
 | There are about 2000 reported cases each year in the UK |
 | There are two forms
 | Meningococcal |
 | Pneumococcal |
|
|
Note that the "What is Meningitis" is entered as the Title, the rest is
"Text". The bullet symbols are added automatically and will be different
from the bullet shown here. The two items "Meningococcal" and
"Pneumococcal" are bullet point within a bullet point. These are set by
typing in the two points are normal, selecting the two lines and clicking on the Demote
button
 | Click on the New Slide button and create a new slide (with the Bulleted List layout) and
type in the following: |
How Serious is it?
 | If treated early most people make a full recovery |
 | In some cases it can be fatal or lead to permanent handicaps like deafness and brain
damage |
|
 | Repeat this for the rest of the slides (all with the Bulleted List layout) (6 in all): |
Viral Meningitis
 | This is more common than bacterial |
 | Rarely life threatening, it can severely weaken a person |
 | It cannot be helped by antibiotics and treatments is based on good nursing care |
 | Recovery is normally complete but headaches, tiredness and depression may persist |
|
How is Bacterial Meningitis Spread?
 | The germs are very common and live in the back of the nose and throat |
 | It is only rarely that they overcome the body's defences and cause meningitis |
 | Spread by coughing, sneezing and kissing, but they cannot livelong outside the body and
cannot be picked up from water supplies, swimming pools, building or factories |
|
What is Septicaemia?
 | Some bacteria that cause meningitis can also cause septicaemia (blood poisoning) as well
as meningitis |
 | Septicaemia can develop quickly |
 | A rash appears under the skin |
 | If untreated they get bigger and become multiple areas of obvious bleeding under the
skin |
 | The rash must be taken seriously - a doctor should be called immediately |
|
How is Meningitis Treated?
 | Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial meningitis |
 | They are also prescribed for the immediate family members or any others who are in very
close contact |
 | Antibiotics are not used for viral meningitis |
|
 | Save the Presentation as a PPT file (the default file type) in the appropriate location
with a sensible name. |

 | For the next stage of this exercise you will need to know how to:
 | Giving slides a Design |
 | Adding Clip Art to Slides |
 | Working with the Slide Master |
|
Stage 2
 | You can now enhance the slides in the following ways:
 | Adding a background design.
[Hint. Click on "Apply Design" in the Common Tasks toolbar (or from the
Format menu)] |
 | Add clipart images to all the slides by adding image(s) to the "Master" slide.
[Hint. The Master slide is accessed by choosing View Master on the View menu.] |
 | Adding individual images to slides using the Insert|Pictures option.
[Hint. You can shorten lines so that they do not overlap an image by using SHIFT
and ENTER. If you shorten lines with just ENTER you create a new bullet point. See
slide 6 below for an example of this.] |
|
 | Save the presentation, overwriting the old version. |

 | For the next stage of this exercise you will need to know how to:
 | Changing Views |
 | Formatting Text |
|
Stage 3
 | View the presentation as a Slide Show |
 | Not all the text on the first slide and slide 5 is visible, select all the text on these
slides and reduce it to about 24 point. |
 | View the slides in the Slide Sorter. They should look similar to: |

 | Save the presentation, overwriting the old version. |
