The Department was awarded a grade 3a in the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise for its work in GIS, Medical Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems. The research is organised in seven areas of Computing which have been designated as Research Units. The Research Units contribute to larger groupings of inter-disciplinary and inter-School Research Centres.
