Summary of Research

Three dimensional computer graphics techniques provide new opportunities for visualisation and simulation of 3D geoscientific phenomena. This project is concerned with the reconstruction of fossils, in particular brachiopods, based on digitised serial sections. A major challenge of the research is the development of techniques for correlating automatically between successive sections that may differ considerably due to inadequate sampling and due to the poor state of preservation of the specimen. It is intended that future development of this work will lead to simulations that can be used in education and research to help in understanding biological structures and processes and well as evolutionary change.
