Members of the Hypermedia Research Unit (HRU)
have been active in the area of intelligent
hypermedia systems since 1991. The group has its
origins in the development of a hypermedia
museum exhibit on local history from the
photographic archives of the Pontypridd Historical
and Cultural Centre. This inspired a research
project to investigate a dynamic, query-based
approach to hypermedia navigation and retrieval,
rather than static, fixed links. This interest has
broadened over the years and the HRU now
considers a range of issues.

The HRU has attracted external funding from the
British Council, ESRC, EPSRC and HEFCW. There are
currently three full-time members of staff, one
research fellow, one research assistant and several
PhD students working in the unit. The Taylor and
Francis New Review of Hypermedia and
Multimedia -- the only specialist journal in
hypermedia -- has been based in the HRU since
1997.
