Human Learning & Reasoning

Humans have a variety of learning mechanisms.

Humans use existing knowledge to learn new knowledge.

Humans can learn from textbooks.
Humans have a variety of learning mechanisms through the process of evolution. Some of these learning mechanisms are shared by animals. Daniel Dennett estimates there might be as many as 40 different learning mechanisms.

One problem with studying human learning from a computational perspective is that humans use a large amount of existing knowledge to learn new knowledge. This makes it difficult to build computational models.

A lot of human learning is done through the process of education, and textbooks play an important role here. Our research methodology is concerned with understanding how this type of human learning can take place.
