I am supporting

Mike's Virtual OfficeCam Mike's Virtual OfficeCam

The window on the right should be a snapshot of my desk, taken just now! This is done with a Connectix QuickCam, and the wonderful FREE WebCamToo software (Mac only!). The window on the left is for the weather cam for my window view - not yet implemented.

Click on the image for a live updated video feed Then you can know whether I was hiding off camera, day or night! How technologically voyeristic!

NOTE: Committed as I am to the University of Glamorgan, it is unlikely that I will be here at night! If it doesn't work, the link is down. Sorry!

An apology!

You might wonder why this page is so small and badly designed. Well, my view is that mechanics always drive home the worst car in the garage, because they never have time to fix their own vehicles. It's the same with the Web - too many other pages to work on. Hopefully, this document will be transformed into an awe-inspiring piece of HTML, CGI (such as Flash, XML, PHP, etc., which will exemplify all that is good in Home Page construction. The projected deadline for achieving this is approximately two months after Microsoft produce a decent operating system and stop copying Apple! So some time next century is the cautious estimate... In the meantime, tell me what you think about libel and the Internet!

What am I interested in...?

I am interested in 3D visualisation of information Spaces, as part of my involvement with the Hypermedia Research Group (this includes simulations via the Internet using VRML & QTVR "A virtual Murder" (currently off-line) and "Project Cronos" for Schools to decypher messages from Outerspace, Constructionism and Schools Outreach using Robots a.k.a. "Mars or Bust!", Video streaming as part of the Digital Imaging and Data Compression research; I'm acting Head of the Group at present! The use of ants - simulated and robotic - forA.I. research, Web document caching algorithms and many other related issues.

NOTE: Not sure I really agree with the current trend to electronically "wear your heart on your sleeve", but if you must know what makes me tick in my spare time...

Where to begin...

It's dificult to know where to start. A friend once described me as "An interesting mix of the very old and the very new!" In general terms, I tend to like Celtic and Tudor history and mythology at one end to high-tech stuff at the other (most aptly the Internet!) My most recent projects being the making of a coracle and research into ancient beekeeping practices - I am acknowledged as a world leader in expertise on Tudor and Medieval Beekeeping, and keep a modest FAQ about it (also in need of updating!).

I am an (un)acomplished musician, (un)able to play the Bodhran (Irish drum), Tin Whistle, Harmonica, Flute and Harp. I used to own two of the latter: A clarsach (34 string) and a lap harp (22 string), but I have upgraded to a small 22 string wire strung lapharp in the medieval style, carved from yew and sadly gathering dust. I tend to slaughter mostly Irish and Folk music, though Medieval and Renaissance pieces are beginning to be tortured even as we speak!

Is this who I am? Well...

Other labels that might stick: Vegan, Pagan (specifically Shaman), Eccentric, Bohemian (The kind without the independent means), Historical Re-enactor, Beekeeper, Writer, Actor, Tai Chi Player, Poet and Storyteller (my favourite pastime!).

Is this who I am? Maybe...

You could look at my current CV for the official stuff

You could ask one of my friends:

Jarkman
Jarkman

Is this who I am? No.

The best solution is to look at the collection of my bookmarks as a rough guide (Rather like looking at someone's bookshelf to see what kind of person they are!):

Chaotic list of robotics stuff | A less chaotic Robotics list | A very focussed Lego Mindstorms list

Artificial Intelligence | Agents | Ants - Artificial and Natural

Miscellaneous (very long and chaotic!)

Will that give you an idea of who I am?

Who knows? Far better to just drop me a line at:

Come back in a few days!
I'm working on these page right NOW!

After several years of fading neglect, I am currently working on an all new dazzling web site. However, my old default page is available here.
