This search interface illustrates the use of XPATH expressions to query a thesaurus directly from a SKOS format RDF file. The thesaurus to be used can be selected via the drop down list at the top of the screen. Once a thesaurus has been selected click on the 'Load' button to load the thesaurus data to your browser. On slower dial-up connections this may take some time (The FTT data file is 145KB in size, the GCL data file is 273KB, the APAIS data file is 599KB and the GSAFD data file is 155KB in size).
The data files used in this demonstrator are included for experimentation purposes only. For further details on the thesauri employed here the following links are provided:
Note: this search demonstrator will currently only run correctly using Internet Explorer browser. We have experienced some unresolved cross browser compatibility issues to date when applying the techniques to Mozilla FireFox and Opera browsers.
A message will be displayed once the required thesaurus has been loaded. You are now ready to search and browse the data. Enter some text in the box. The drop down list allows you to specify whether to search for terms starting with the text you have typed, or for terms containing the text you have typed.
Click on the 'find' button to search for matching terms in the loaded thesaurus. An alphabetical list of matching terms will be displayed, together with a count of the total number of matching terms found. Terms of the form 'xxx --> USE yyy' are non-preferred term matches, with a link to the associated preferred term. Clicking any of the retrieved terms will show the location of the preferred term within a hierarchical structure of terms. Any scope notes, definitions, non-preferred (use for) terms and related term links are also displayed in the lower box.
